How to use EasyTaxer
One question per page: a short video and the same steps written out, for each part of EasyTaxer. More pages are added as each video is made.
Start here: set up EasyTaxer
How do I sign up and connect EasyTaxer to HMRC?
Create your account with your email address and confirm it with the code EasyTaxer emails you. Once inside, add your National Insurance number, then select Connect to HMRC and give permission on HMRC's own website.
How do I choose my income sources in EasyTaxer?
Open Income sources. The businesses in HMRC's records are selected for you; tick any other income you had in the tax year, such as savings interest or UK dividends, then select Save.
How do I choose standard or calendar quarters for my business?
Open Settings → Business details and choose the business. Set Quarterly Period Type to standard or calendar quarters, then select Save All Changes: EasyTaxer saves the change with HMRC.
How do I sign in to EasyTaxer, and what if I forget my password?
Enter the email address and password you signed up with, select Sign in, then enter the 6-digit code EasyTaxer emails you. Forgotten your password? Select Forgot password? on the sign-in page.
Keeping records: the Money section
How do I add, categorise, edit and delete transactions for my self-employment?
Open Transactions and select New. Enter the account, date, description and amount, set the type to Income or Expense, choose a category for a cost, and save. The pencil icon edits a transaction and the bin icon deletes one.
How do I attach a receipt to a transaction?
Find the transaction in Transactions and select its paperclip icon, then select Attach receipts and choose a photo or a PDF. You can attach up to 10 files to one transaction.
How do I import transactions from a spreadsheet?
In Transactions, select Import, choose the account and download the Excel template. Fill in one row per transaction, upload the file and select Import. If any row has a problem, nothing is imported and the errors are listed.
How do I add a bank account in EasyTaxer?
Open Bank accounts and select Add New Bank Account. Enter a name you'll recognise, the bank, the account number and sort code, the starting balance and its date, choose the business, then select Save.
How do I claim business mileage at HMRC's flat rate?
Open Mileage, add your vehicle, then select Record mileage and enter your business miles for the period. EasyTaxer works out the flat-rate expense at HMRC's rates and includes it in your quarterly update.
Quarterly updates
How do I submit a quarterly update for self-employment?
Record your income and expenses as transactions, open Submissions, choose the quarter, check the figures EasyTaxer will send, then select Submit and confirm.
How do I submit a quarterly update for UK property?
Record the rent you receive as transactions, open Submissions, choose your UK property quarter, check the figures, then select Submit and confirm.
How do I check my deadlines (obligations)?
Your dashboard shows your next deadline. To see every quarter for every business, with its period, deadline and status, select See all deadlines.
How do I submit a quarterly update for foreign property?
Record the rent from your property abroad as transactions, open Submissions, choose the quarter, check the figures EasyTaxer will send, then select Submit and confirm.
Year end: your businesses
How do I submit my final declaration (tax return) for 2026-27?
The final declaration is your tax return for the year, sent from your Making Tax Digital software. For 2026-27 it is due by 31 January 2028, and HMRC accepts it only after the tax year ends on 5 April 2027.
How do I see HMRC's tax calculation in EasyTaxer?
Go to Tax → Calculations. After a quarterly update you can ask HMRC for an in-year estimate; at the year end, Intent to Finalise runs the calculation your final declaration is based on.
How do I make accounting adjustments (BSAS) in EasyTaxer?
After your fourth quarterly update you may need to adjust your annual totals before your tax return. EasyTaxer does it through HMRC's Business Source Adjustable Summary (BSAS): trigger one, then amend its totals and submit.
How do I claim a business loss in EasyTaxer?
On Tax → Losses & Claims you tell HMRC how you want to use a loss: brought forward against this year's profit, carried forward, carried back or set sideways, or as a terminal loss. HMRC only accepts losses and claims once the tax year has ended.
How do I see what I owe HMRC in EasyTaxer?
Settings → HMRC account shows what HMRC's own Self Assessment records say: your balance, charges, the payments HMRC has recorded, any penalties, and amounts collected through your tax code. To pay, claim a refund or change payments on account, use HMRC's own services.
Other tax items
Which Self Assessment tasks do I do with HMRC instead of EasyTaxer?
Opting out, paying your tax bill, claiming a refund, changing payments on account, adding or closing a business and changing how HMRC contacts you are done with HMRC, not in EasyTaxer. HMRC services lists each task with a link.
How do I report a tax liability adjustment for a loss carried back?
When you carry a loss back to an earlier year, HMRC gives the relief as a decrease in this year's tax, not by reopening the earlier year. Enter the decrease on Tax → Tax liability adjustments, and record the matching carry-back claim on Losses & Claims before your final declaration.
Income types A to Z
How do I add or check my employment income in EasyTaxer?
HMRC adds the PAYE employment income it knows about to your tax return, and you must check it. On Income → Employment you can see HMRC's employments, add one HMRC doesn't have, and report employment expenses and tips. Employment is reported once a year, after the tax year ends.
How do I check or add CIS deductions in EasyTaxer?
CIS deductions taken by contractors count as advance payments towards your tax and National Insurance, and are set against your tax bill. HMRC adds the subcontractor deductions it holds to your tax return. On Income → CIS you see them, and can add a contractor's deductions once the tax year has ended.
How do I check my taxable state benefits in EasyTaxer?
HMRC adds the taxable state benefits it knows about to your tax return, and you must check them. On Income → Benefits you can correct or ignore HMRC's figures, and add a benefit HMRC doesn't have, once the tax year has ended.

Open Settings → Account, scroll to Download My Data and select Download ZIP. Submitted tax returns and HMRC tax calculations are not included; you can retrieve those from your HMRC account.
How do I turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app?
Every sign-in already needs a code EasyTaxer emails you. To use an authenticator app instead, open Settings → Account, select Set up authenticator app, scan the QR code, then enter the 6-digit code and select Verify & enable.
