How do I see what I owe HMRC in EasyTaxer?

Settings → HMRC account shows what HMRC's own Self Assessment records say: your balance, charges, the payments HMRC has recorded, any penalties, and amounts collected through your tax code. To pay, claim a refund or change payments on account, use HMRC's own services.

Where to find it in EasyTaxer: Settings → HMRC account

A still from the video: a dark green title slide labelled MTD for Income Tax, Your HMRC account, listing two numbered steps, Balance and charges and Payments on account, with the EasyTaxer logo in the corner, under the title What do you owe HMRC?

Steps: the text version of this video

  1. The short answer

In EasyTaxer, Settings, then HMRC account, shows what HMRC's own Self Assessment records say: your balance, the charges on your account, the payments HMRC has recorded, any penalties, and amounts collected through your tax code. To actually pay, claim a refund, or change your payments on account, you use HMRC's own services.

  2. What you owe

What you owe shows your total balance, split into overdue, due now, and not yet due, with each charge listed by tax year, and what's still outstanding. You can also look up a single charge by its reference.

  3. Payments on account

Payments on account are payments towards your next tax bill, in two instalments, each usually half of last year's tax, due by 31 January and 31 July. You don't make them if last year's tax was less than £1,000, or if you paid more than 80% of it outside Self Assessment. Making Tax Digital doesn't change the way you pay tax, or when payments are due.

  4. Payments, penalties and your tax code

The page also lists the payments HMRC has recorded, and any late submission points or late payment penalties HMRC has applied in the last 24 months. And you can choose whether HMRC collects what you owe through your PAYE tax code.

  5. Paying HMRC

To pay, sign in to your HMRC online account. HMRC's guidance says you can use it to check what you owe and make a payment, and to adjust a payment on account. EasyTaxer's page links you there.

  6. EasyTaxer is recognised by HMRC for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. You'll find it at easytaxer.com.
