How do I see HMRC's tax calculation in EasyTaxer?

Go to Tax → Calculations. After a quarterly update you can ask HMRC for an in-year estimate; at the year end, Intent to Finalise runs the calculation your final declaration is based on.

Where to find it in EasyTaxer: Tax → Calculations

A still from the video: a dark green title slide labelled MTD for Income Tax, Year end, listing two numbered steps, Estimate in the year and Check at year end, with the EasyTaxer logo in the corner, under the title Your tax calculation.

The video for this page is coming soon. The steps below describe everything it will show, in the same order.

Step by step

  1. Open Tax → Calculations and pick the tax year.
  2. Select Run in-year calculation to ask HMRC for an estimate from what you have sent so far.
  3. Open a calculation's details to see HMRC's figures; ask HMRC Assist to check it for common mistakes.
  4. After the tax year ends, select Intent to Finalise and check the calculation before your final declaration.

Steps: the text version of this video

  1. The short answer

Your tax calculation is HMRC's working out of your tax, from what you've sent. In EasyTaxer, it's under Tax, then Calculations. During the year, you can ask HMRC for an estimate. After the year ends, you check the calculation your final declaration is based on.

  2. An estimate during the year

After you send a quarterly update, you can get an estimate of your tax bill. In EasyTaxer, select Run in-year calculation, which sends a calculation request to HMRC. HMRC includes other information it already holds, but the estimate is less accurate if you haven't told HMRC about all your income yet.

  3. Reading a calculation

Each calculation is listed with its period, type, outcome and liability. Open one to see HMRC's details. A tax calculation shows your total income on which tax is due, your allowances and reliefs, the total you owe for the year, and how HMRC worked it out.

  4. HMRC Assist

You can also ask HMRC Assist to check a calculation for common mistakes. HMRC Assist gives feedback and highlights errors for your tax return, using what you've submitted and the data HMRC holds. It's advice: you read HMRC's messages, and can tell HMRC you've read them.

  5. At the year end

After the tax year ends, and once every quarterly update is complete, select Intent to Finalise. That runs the finalisation calculation, the basis for your final declaration. View it, and check it's correct, before you submit. For 2026 to 2027, that's after 5 April 2027.
