How do I claim business mileage at HMRC's flat rate?

Open Mileage, add your vehicle, then select Record mileage and enter your business miles for the period. EasyTaxer works out the flat-rate expense at HMRC's rates and includes it in your quarterly update.

Video coming soon

The video for this page is coming soon. The steps below describe everything it will show, in the same order.

Before you start

  • If capital allowances have ever been claimed for the vehicle, it cannot use the flat mileage rate.

Step by step

  1. Open Mileage from the menu. EasyTaxer works out the flat-rate mileage expense HMRC allows for your business miles and includes it in your quarterly update.
  2. Select Add vehicle. Enter a name and choose Car or goods vehicle (van), or Motorcycle: the rate depends on the type.
  3. If capital allowances have ever been claimed for the vehicle, tick that box: it cannot use the flat mileage rate. Once you adopt the flat rate for a vehicle, you must keep using it while the vehicle stays in the business.
  4. Select Record mileage. Choose the vehicle, enter the period (From and To) and your business miles only, not your total mileage.
  5. Your claim for the tax year is worked out at the HMRC rates shown on the page.
  6. Tolls, congestion charges and parking are not covered by the flat rate: claim them as ordinary expenses. The flat rate replaces the vehicle's actual running costs, so don't also claim fuel, insurance, repairs and so on for the same vehicle.

Steps: the text version of this video

  1. Mileage

Record your business miles in Mileage. EasyTaxer works out the flat-rate expense HMRC allows, and includes it in your quarterly update.

  2. Add your vehicle

First, add your vehicle: a name, and whether it's a car or van, or a motorcycle, because the rate depends on the type. If capital allowances have ever been claimed for it, tick the box, because it can't use the flat rate.

  3. Record mileage

Then select Record mileage. Enter the period, and your business miles only, not your total mileage.

  4. Your claim

EasyTaxer works out your claim at the HMRC rates shown for the tax year. You don't need to work out the pounds yourself.

  5. Tolls and parking

Tolls, congestion charges and parking aren't covered by the flat rate, so claim them as ordinary expenses.

What happens next
