How do I check or add CIS deductions in EasyTaxer?

CIS deductions taken by contractors count as advance payments towards your tax and National Insurance, and are set against your tax bill. HMRC adds the subcontractor deductions it holds to your tax return. On Income → CIS you see them, and can add a contractor's deductions once the tax year has ended.

Where to find it in EasyTaxer: Income → CIS

The video for this page is coming soon. The steps below describe everything it will show, in the same order.

Step by step

  1. Open Income → CIS and pick the tax year.
  2. Check Deductions held by HMRC: one record per contractor.
  3. To add one, use Add a contractor's deductions: the contractor, their employer (PAYE) reference, the whole tax year, and the monthly figures.
  4. Select Submit deductions, once the tax year has ended.

Steps: the text version of this video

  1. The short answer

If you're a subcontractor under the Construction Industry Scheme, the deductions contractors take from your payments count as advance payments towards your tax and National Insurance. They're set against your tax bill. In EasyTaxer, that's Income, then CIS.

  2. The deduction rates

A contractor deducts 20% if you're registered for CIS, and 30% if you're not. With gross payment status, nothing is deducted, and you pay your own tax.

  3. What HMRC holds

HMRC adds the CIS subcontractor deductions it holds to your tax return, and you must check them. In EasyTaxer, Deductions held by HMRC shows a record for each contractor. Records reported by a contractor are read-only.

  4. Adding a contractor's deductions

If one is missing, use Add a contractor's deductions: the contractor, their employer reference, the whole tax year from 6 April to 5 April, and the monthly figures. HMRC only accepts new records once the tax year has ended: for 2026 to 2027, after 5 April 2027.

  5. EasyTaxer is recognised by HMRC for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. You'll find it at easytaxer.com.
