  1. The short answer

HMRC does not provide Making Tax Digital software, and does not recommend any product. Its guidance on GOV.UK lists what the software you choose needs to do, and its software finder shows products that have been through HMRC's recognition process.

  2. What it must do

The software you choose needs to support all your income sources for Making Tax Digital. Let you send quarterly updates and submit your tax return. Let you report all your other income, to complete your tax return. And work with your accounting period.

  3. Two types of software

There are two types. Software that creates digital records, for example by linking to your business bank account, scanning receipts, or entering them yourself. And bridging software, which connects to records you already keep, such as spreadsheets.

  4. Also worth checking

HMRC also suggests considering whether the software allows more than one agent, if you have more than one. Whether it has HMRC Assist built in, which gives feedback and highlights errors for your tax return. Whether the pricing suits your budget. And whether it will support an income source you might add later.

  5. Using HMRC's software finder

HMRC's software finder offers three ways to search: answer questions about your income, browse a list of all available software with filters, or check whether your current software is compatible, including spreadsheets.

  6. EasyTaxer is recognised by HMRC for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. You'll find it at easytaxer.com.
